Friday Forum - July 30, 2010

Yesterday, I had a great conversation with some of our Members of Congress about our terrific group of women candidates.  Our Members are looking forward to having more Republican women on the Hill speaking about issues that resonate with all Americans.  

 

If you were chatting with our female candidates, what would you like to tell them and why?  Would you share your concerns for America’s future?  Or your solutions?

I would provide the solutions we need. Those include:
passage of the Enumerated Powers Act. The majority of all Congressional activity and law is unconstitutional and needs to be stopped.
We need term limits: two terms for the Senate, three for the House.
We need to abolish "riders" on bills. They cause no end of problems.
We need a law that clarifies that members of Congress are subject to impeachment under Article II, Section 4 and we need to start imposing that on those who refuse to uphold their oath to the Constitution, including refusing to read legislation and yet vote on it.
We need to appeal basically everything passed under Obama.
We need to abolish the majority of regulatory agencies--some may appear at the state level, others may go "private." For the few legit agencies, such as the FBI, they need to be accountable.
We need to end the Fed--virtually every problem will disappear with that one action. Return to the gold standard.
We also need to impeach Obama and it should have been done a long time ago.
There are other changes that need to be made, but that's a good start.

Tom Tamcredo of CO is running on "Empeaching the President." Great for him. This president has violated the law repeatedly -- eliminated the missle defense in Poland in a "blink" - wasn't even proposed to Congress. Is this insane? Why is no one standing up to stop this takeover --

Additionally, we all voted for our representatives, they voted for laws that THEY NEVER READ (admittedly so) and those laws should be repealed. This country is run BY the people ... our votes have not been counted for one law ... this is illegal and rises to the level of impeachment.

These candidates need to know that we expect them to uphold the U.S. Constitution as it is written, not as a "living document" that changes at the whim of whoever happens to be in office any given day. The Republican Party needs to be known as the nation's foremost protectors of the Constitution, not as it is known today - as the Party That's Lost Its Way / The Party That Won't Stand Up and Defend What is Right / The Party That Will Compromise For the Sake of Compromise and a myriad of other descriptive "titles". Republican candidates who happen to be women need to talk to ALL Americans - men, women, young, old, black, white and Hispanic. As a matter of fact, Republican women need to aggressively reach out to the millions of conservatives who are black. Republicans give up the black vote as if it is unwinnable when, in fact, the Dem's hold on blacks can be weakened significantly ... especially on the issue of gay marriage. Blacks are extremely conservative on that issue but Republican leaders are too "confused" to exploit it. Which brings me to this point: Republicans do NOT need to have a bigger tent (My Governor, Gov Barbour, came up with that cockamamie idea ... big mistake!). What we need is adherence to the principles that made this nation great - Judeo Christian values of honesty, hard work, limited government, fiscal responsibility, traditional family values, personal responsibility and most importantly, honoring God. I'd like to see Republican women candidates fight for women who would like to raise their children at home and still maintain a comfortable lifestyle. In other words, lower taxes that allow us to keep more of our own money. On the education front ... another huge issue with women ... let's see some innovative ideas ... but without sacrificing readin', writin' and 'rithmetic. Illegal immigration ... stand firmly in favor of protecting our borders ... get rid of Sanctuary Cities ... say NO! to amnesty ...
Life issues ... protect innocent human life from conception to natural death. Fiscal responsibility ... lower taxes, less waste, root out corruption.

I'd bring up why it's so absolutely archaic the way child support is done in this country. States don't work with each other and it's the custodial parent that is looked upon like some cheap welfare recipient instead of a person trying to be everything to their children when the other parent, if they intend, can play every game without worrying much about anything until they are months and perhaps years in the arrears. Meanwhile, a custodial parent gets to choose between working 2/3 jobs to feed the kids and worries constantly what the kids are doing while they are away, or quiting their jobs to take care of the kids and teaching the kids that it's ok to let others be responsible for them. This is reprehensible and it seems like the agencies are more interested in perpetuating the agency than actually helping.

I would say that I am counting on them to protect our nation first and foremost. By that, I mean to secure our borders and to stop waste, fraud and abuse in government. Get us out of debt as a nation and get government out of the way of private enterprise. Adhere to your oath of office to uphold our U.S. Constitution. Lead by example as honest people of integrity who cannot be bought and whose main mission is not to get re-elected, but rather to inspire Americans to become self-sufficient and independent from government largesse. Initiate a Fair Tax. Protect America's citizens from government and protect us from International treaties and laws that are destructive to our Constitutional rights. Get the U.N. out of the U.S. The nations are not united and their agenda is anti-American freedoms.
Remember that charity begins at home. Restore Medicare and Social Security to solvency and stop trying to buy friendship with other nations with donations we cannot afford. Balance the U.S. budget and bring more manufacturing to the U.S. along with good jobs.
If elected, remember that you are a servant of the people and are bound by the Constitution.

Dear Linda, that was a great answer. Covers almost everything that will work!

Social security was started as a "savings account" so that citizens would have retirement money
and the government would have less obligation for retirees. However, because THE GOVERNMENT
ROBS THE SOCIAL SECURITY ACCOUNT - the money is not there. Imagine if this savings were accumulating
on a compounded interest basis -- retirees would all have a substantial savings account. The government
would NOT be obligation to a growing elderly population. Seems pretty simple, except that government does not stick to the rules or purpose of retirement accounts. In other words, social security is really a 401K plan for people who do not have them ... it should be growing at a healthy rate.

Healthcare could be resolved without going to this draconian outrageous system - that no one knows what's in the bill -- probably people would be extremely upset if they realized the elimination of many of our freedoms and now we learn that the Freedom of Information Act has been disbanned in the Financial overhaul ...meaning what they are doing is SECRET from the owners of this country - us!

There are plans in these several bills that are going to create domination of americans ... all candidates should be speaking out against the elimination of the Freedom of Information Act PLUS all these laws shoudl be declared unconstitutional -- as OUR representatives have not read them and don't know what's in them ... why would they be legal?

I am very worried about the Obama Health Plan. I am turning 70 soon and wonder what's in the futher for me. We need to do something about it. Any one have any ideas? You can be sure that our family will be voting Rep. in Nov.

The first thing I would tell them is to respond to the voter's questions. For example, I asked my candidate how she stood on the most recent legislation passed to strengthen protection for Native American women and have not received a response. Instead, I received an e-mail, "Walk for Me". With all due respect, at this point in time, Ms. Candidate does not have my vote, much less my walking shoes, until she explicitly tells me where she stands on this piece of legislation and, most importantly, why.

You see, Jan, Native American women are systemically beaten, raped, etc, and NOTHING is done about it. The incumbent Senator has done a fantastic job in trying to get federal dollars to help their plight, as has Kristi's House incumbent opposition. I know where her democrat competitor stands. There is also a huge problem in trafficking of Native American women so I want to know where she stands on that, as well. How do I know this? I've been involved in organizations that help women who have been trafficked. Additionally, I have friends who are Lakota women who have shared with me the horrors that they have witnessed. I'm not walking, or voting, for any unknown who does not answer this question, direct. The answer, stiffer prison terms for the pimps who force women (men and children) into prostitution when they are homeless (yes, Jan, these women trade sex for one night of shelter when the homeless shelters are full).

I also want them to answer the big question - JOBS. I have several friends who are trying to find work. One for over three years, another just lost her job, yet another with M.S. and will, in all likelihood, loose her home. I've heard the rhetoric about letting the cuts expire, the 'new plan' (whatever that is) will only impact people making over 200k, or is it 250k (they can't make up their minds). So, where does that leave Liz Claiborne and the brands under that umbrella? A couple of months ago, I read that they are on the brink of insolvency. If the 'top tier' has to cut back due to a cut in there discretionary spending caused by enormous tax hikes, where would that leave the Claiborne company and employees (including any remaining union workers and illegal’s)? How do the candidates in the garment states feel about this? Better yet, how about those employed by the rag-trade?

How many jobs have actually been created? Are they permanent? Much ado has been made about the Health Care technology boom. The question I have is how many of those jobs will remain once the ICD 9 to 10 conversion is done? Over 5k jobs were created by the billions of broadband dollars. Do you know how many people have lost their jobs in the telecom industry in the past few years? Are the 5k permanent or just to build out the infrastructure? Can anyone answer these questions?

Billions of dollars have been poured into higher education, yet students remain concerned that they will not have a job when they get done with school. In a time where we are all "tightening our belts", it doesn't make sense to these kids (or adults for that matter) to voluntarily take on tens of thousands of dollars in debt only to land a job as a rent-a-cop at the mall.

The next question I have, boarder control. Jan, this whole debate is completely out of hand. I watched the interview that Greta did with the poor woman whose husband was murdered while checking his water lines. In the interview, this poor widow even stated that they used to help these poor people trying to get a better life. For the longest time, it was just a couple of guys, then their families, before they knew it, over 50 people. Even then, this honorable family said thought something was wrong and more needed to be done in Mexico to protect the families. It's been happening gradually for over 20 years.

Now we have a situation where you can't tell the good guys from the bad guys and the bad guys just leveled up in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico by setting off a car bomb less than 10 minutes away from El Paso! How long before they try that crap in America? It's bad enough we have to worry about the terrorists, now we also have to worry about the traffickers as well? We need stiffer penalties and increased security. This has nothing to do with a person's nationality, it has everything to do with getting the same traffickers that are forcing the Mexican people to flee in terror (or simply enslaving them and forcing them across the boarder like cattle) off our streets for the protection of our citizens and, yes, the illegal’s.

What about all of that time and money spent on the special task force to 'crack down on the banking system'? What have they really done to help those injured in this mess? Were the banks who knowingly lowered maximum balances below the outstanding balances, then charged daily over the limit fees, plus the interest, held accountable for their actions? Were any of the people caught up in this able to recover anything? No, they were not. Was legislation passed to stop the bad business practices? Yes and no. Shortly after, one bank came out with a great offer with the potential of 75% interest.

Our young men and women who are defending our country are being killed at a faster pace than before Obama took office. July was the highest casualty rate. Will someone listen, and act, to the voices of experience to get our young men and women the tools they need to get the job done, completely transition the policing and military efforts to Iraq and Afghanistan and bring our families home?

North Korea is threatening nuclear action if South Korea and America perform military training near the demilitarized zone. What are their thoughts on this?

The world economy continues to teeter, even China is starting to feel the impact and slowing down. The G 4 through whatever number they are on now are saying we need to cut spending. Is anyone going to do it? Thune submitted a plan, will anyone take action on it?

Will the party of no way in h***, we won, even contemplate listing to the 'party of no' on any solutions? Will the candidates be open to hearing the dems ideas on some things (not all are bad - the delivery methods, however, leave a lot to be desired).

This is just the tip of the iceberg on my thoughts. Here are some of my solutions:

1. Extend the tax breaks for 6 months. During this time, work together to come up with a solution to keep taxes at a minimum and create an environment that encourages American companies to keep jobs in America, not overseas (when I was job searching, one of the jobs I did a prelim interview for was to coordinate the efforts to shut down a technology department in MN only to ship the jobs to India).

2. Work on a plan to reduce the deficit (I really like Thune's plan).

3. Take greater action on the banks who did the most damage to their customers (with all due respect, lowering the minimum balance below the outstanding balance smacks of fraud to me).

4. Listen to the military leaders and give them the tools to do their jobs so our families can come home.

5. I personally think that traffickers should get the death penalty for all of the death and destruction they cause. If that can't happen, life in prison, or gitmo. Let's face it, shipping them home doesn't stop the problem as they just find another way back in.

6. Strengthen immigration laws for everyone coming in and increase boarder security, north and south. I'm sure Canada would understand (btw, they've done a great job in stabilizing their economy, don't you think?).

7. End pre-existing conditions!!! Right now, I'm paying nearly 400/month in cobra premiums just to keep the continuation going until my new plan kicks in. Imagine how much families are paying who do not have jobs. Could I save if I dropped to private? Yes, but then I'd have to deal with the pre-existing condition mess all over again and I can't afford it.

Most importantly, Ladies, RESPOND to your constituency before you ask for their money or walking shoes and stop the NObama crap. I don't want to hear trash talk, I want to hear solutions. If you don't have the backbone to take a stand and come up with a plan, then you whould not be in the race. And if you are one of those who are way out on the right and I don’t like the left, I’ll simply leave that spot on the ballot blank or write in someone else (if possible).

Reading your points, as we all agree, make me very sad. We were a free country based on immigrants from all over the world. Obviously, when populations grow, it's impossible to have an open door, so that millions can just show up and expect jobs & services. Do you know our immigration policies? For example, how many people can apply here for immigration from Ireland, France, Spain, Australia, Mexico -- ?

I tried to find this answer and, I believe, they have discontinued this immigration policy and many countries are not allowed here. Some countries are required to have a huge amount of money in the bank before they are considered, friends of mine have spent ten years seeking legal immigration. To me, immigration should be based on productivity only - do we need engineers or doctors or farm workers ... then we make it fair for everyone. Seems like a simple remedy because we are trying to make it in America - keep our jobs and freedom. This has to come FIRST!

As far as left or right -- all I know is this, on a simple basis: republicans want small government and low taxes (the smart ones see the viability of consumption tax or flat tax),

Democrats (unfortunately there is no longer a democrat party - they are now called progressives - leading the politics of Saul Alinsky) need to raise taxes as their policy which is why they are trying to bring as many illegals here as possible and then enslave them into the "give away ideology" where people are trapped.

To me, it's simple -- all of the other issues should be secondary for this election in particular: Freedom Vs. Servitude.
